Why Opera?

In Kinshasa, where 90% of young people suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress, opera provides essential relief. Music has been proven to alleviate symptoms of PTS such as mood swings, high reactivity and emotionally dysregulating intrusions. This healing will give hope to the whole community of Kinshasa and allow it to grow and thrive in the future.

Along with ameliorating aspects of trauma in Kinshasa, our opera programs offer many other advantages to individuals and the community at large. Music is proven to increase brain activity and enhance creative thinking, providing young people with a platform on which to develop their skills. Opera builds common spirit and can touch large audiences, most of which have not experienced classical music before – these memories and experiences are invaluable.

Opera has the unrivalled ability to engage and unify communities, transcending spoken language and encouraging a deeper human connection. As a multicultural art form, opera allows participants and audiences to imagine others’ stories and worlds, without the expense of travelling. As Operanauts, we provide training, exposure, and – most importantly – we generate employment for the many immensely talented musicians of Congo.

“Music acts like a magic key, to which the most tightly closed heart opens.”
