Hey there, music enthusiasts! Imagine a magical world where talented young musicians in Kinshasa, DRC, are part of a special project called Operanauts Opera Chamber Ensemble Training. Even though they live in one of the city’s poorest areas, they’re creating something extraordinary!
Starting on September 26 and wrapping up on December 15, 2023, these awesome musicians are on a mission. Guided by the program’s supervisor, they connect remotely to study, learn, and rehearse a beautiful chamber opera arrangement by Mozart, crafted by the talented New Jersey composer, Craig Levesque. All of this is happening in French, adding a touch of elegance to their musical journey.
But here’s the twist: not everyone has a phone or enough data for downloads. Some face challenges, like a cellist whose instrument needs repairs or a violist with old strings that sound a bit off. Picture them rehearsing under the light of a phone in the darkness of night or or in the daytime, making music in a courtyard.
Their remote training is like a musical adventure. The supervisor sends them parts of the opera as PDFs, and together, they rehearse. They create videos, and within three days, a master teaching artist sends back feedback, helping them fine-tune their skills. After 12 weeks, the ensemble will have submitted videos for each piece, showcasing their hard work.
At the grand finale, these young musicians share their thoughts, and the master teaching artist awards scores for their preparation, execution, and musicality. A special certificate of achievement awaits them, a token of their dedication and passion. Imagine the joy and pride as they prepare to accompany soloists in a preview performance of the opera in 2024. These young musicians are proving that music knows no boundaries. Bravo to their indomitable spirit and the magic they’re creating against all odds!
